Moving Tips

Get Involved, Organize, and Plan

First of all, when moving, be prepared to get involved with the moving process. Getting involved will allow your moving operation to go much more efficiently. With good organization, and carefully structured planning, you will be able to construct an efficient and virtually painless move.

Compile Personal Records

A couple of months before your move, you should begin to collate records of your personal history. This is an especially important process when moving long distances. Records you might want to have transferred to your new town of residence would include medical, dental, financial, legal, insurance, pet medical records, etc. Getting these records together before the move can save valuable time after you are in your new home.

Have a Garage Sale!

If you are like most people, you have in your possession many items you really have no use for anymore. Sponsor a garage sale before your move to give yourself a little junk relief! You just might raise enough money to pay for your household goods moving expenses! Remember, one man's junk is another man's treasure! If you don't need it, unload it.

After collecting your moving boxes, and before packing your items, take an inventory of items being moved. Come up with your own easy method to track your inventory. Make some type of list so you can check your items off as they are delivered from the moving services truck. You will NOT want to itemize valuables such as expensive jewelry, family heirlooms, money, etc. Take these types of items with you, as they are more likely to turn up missing or stolen. You should also not pack any perishables into the moving services truck in case of an emergency breakdown. Keep in mind that moving carriers normally will not assume liability for items of extraordinary value or perishables.

Other Notables

If there is one thing we can't stress enough, it would be to PURCHASE MOVING INSURANCE! Insurance is relatively inexpensive, and there is no end to the horror stories concerning damaged antiques, heirlooms, etc. that were lost, with no legal recourse, due to non-insured moves, insure your household goods moving process.

Have your old phone number disconnected the day after your move. Keep your phone turned on during the move in case anyone needs to get in touch with you, or if you just want to order PIZZA!

Mark your checklist as your household goods moving items are taken off the moving truck. Make a separate list of items missing or damaged, and have the movers sign the document if possible. Take photographs of any damaged items next to the moving truck in case you need proof at a later date. Keep the damaged items in your possession until a settlement is reached, even if the items are damaged beyond repair.

Always have a person accompany the movers during the packing/unpacking and loading/unloading processes. It will help to keep you informed of the status of the items being packed/unpacked and the condition of the items at the time of loading/unloading.

Check your new area for the availability of suitable parking for the truck that will allow the movers to comfortably load and unload your household belongings. Remember, you are being charged per hour, therefore if the movers only need to walk a short distance to and from the parking area to deliver you household goods, it will eliminate additional charges.

Inquire the restrictions that the complex may impose regarding moving companies. Most larger buildings, especially in city areas, allow moves only between the hours of 9am and 5pm on Monday through Friday. Remind the movers to provide the necessary certificates of insurance. These documents protect the building against possible damages. Most building superintendents will not allow entrance without the proper proof of insurance.

The availability of suitable elevator units is also very important. Elevators must be able to accommodate your large furniture, such as sofas, or large bedroom sets. This will also eliminate excess time from accruing to your final cost, most furniture movers will charge you extra for stairs or elevator
